Learn alternative styles quickly! Jazz, rock, Celtic, Latin, blues, and more. All from the fellow who “wrote the book” on re-inventing the violin. Jazz violinist Doug Cameron is a leader in alternative styles of violin playing. With eight CDs to his credit, Cameron is a favorite on jazz radio internationally and is well known for his unique, trademark style. Cameron’s CDs feature many of his own compositions and arrangements. As a recording artist in Hollywood, Cameron has worked with wide a variety of artists, including Tom Petty, Doc Severinsen, Gregg Allman, Cher, David Foster, Steve Vai, George Benson, and countless others, and Doug’s music can be heard in many major feature films. Today Doug tours extensively, frequently appearing as soloist with symphony orchestras in captivating concerts featuring his own compositions.

Many jazz luminaries have appeared on Cameron’s eight CDs, including David Benoit, Joe Sample, Lee Ritenour, Russ Ferrante of The Yellowjackets, Gerald Albright, Boney James, Vinnie Colaiuta, and others. Doug has now created a unique series of instructional music books paired with backing tracks featuring some of LA’s top studio musicians. These tracks are truly inspiring to play along to! Doug’s music books contain meticulously laid out transcriptions from his CDs, even including the jazz solos from his recordings. Also included in his introduction music book are invaluable insights into Doug’s extensive career as a recording artist, composer, arranger, studio musician, and performer. Renowned producer David Foster says, “It teaches what real musicians need to know!”

Sample Lesson from Course – Volume 2 – Passion Suite

The project also includes instructional videos filmed in high definition to clearly show you how Doug approaches each piece of music. One video from each book also contains one piece’s full rhythm track performed live onscreen by Doug’s band, so you can actually perform the song while accompanied by Doug’s own rhythm section. You’ll truly feel like you are part of the ensemble! Furthermore, on Doug’s backing tracks you will be inspired while playing with amazing musicians like Vinnie Colauita, who is Sting’s drummer, Chad Wackerman who played with Frank Zappa for longer than any other drummer, and is currently James Taylor’s Drummer. Jimmy Johnson on Bass Russ Ferrante from The Yellowjackets on piano. Lee Ritenour playing guitar and many other world class musicians.

Although Cameron is known primarily as a jazz violinist, he is equally proficient in many other diverse styles, including Latin, Celtic, country, and blues. This series encompasses each of these alternative styles. It functions as a “Swiss army knife,” providing you with all the tools you need to cut into these various styles of music on your stringed instrument.

What you will gain from this series

  • Insight

into different ways to approach the violin while still using your classical chops.

  • A solid understanding

of rhythm and how to play and feed off of a rhythm section.

  • My years

as not only a recording artist, but a studio musician in Los Angeles, arranger, composer and producer.

  • A better understanding

of electronics, and recording equipment, and how to make an electric violin or acoustic violin sound great.

  • Recording techniques

that will make your project more listenable and enjoyable to the public.

  • Improvisation

creating your own solos while still keeping the listener’s interest and attention.

From Doug

“In my experience as a jazz violinist, I have seen so many violinists who are keen to learn to play jazz, but can’t quite get it. They are often lost when they don’t have music in front of them. I am convinced that anybody who goes through this series and can play all of this music will come out a better, more well-rounded musician. Many of my solo’s sections are written out with the actual solos I played on the recordings. However, I will be encouraging you to make up some of your own solos and come up with your own ideas.

Most importantly, I will be giving you tips and insight on how to appeal to the listener, whether he or she is a jazz musician or not. This is why I believe my recordings have been the most radio-friendly most played of any jazz violinist on contemporary jazz stations. If you are interested in playing and yes, possibly writing music especially for the violin that can appeal to a wider audience, not just jazz musicians, this series is for you. Yes, most all of my records are jazz oriented, but I have learned to play and love many different styles of music.

In our meetups I will also be discussing for those interested aspects that I feel are vitally important to be successful in the business of music. Many of these I touch on in my introduction volume of my series where I touch on different subjects. As an example, I have been working quite a bit as a headliner on cruise ships. I am one of the most in demand, highest paid in the industry. For those of you who don’t know what performing on a ship is like now, it’s not the love boat! The bar has been raised. It is a great job…I have traveled the world many times over performing on ships. But you have to bring it! You have to have a show that can capture your audience in a matter of minutes. There are many other things the guests can be doing on a ship. My show is very complex. It is without question one of the most challenging shows in the industry for the band. There is also video we perform with and many technical issues associated with my show. I often have as little as one to one and a half hours to put all of this together and create a show that feels like a concert situation. The band must be on the same page and look and sound like they are my band if the show is going to come off at the level, I would be happy with. I will be discussing how to prepare for not only this, but generally how to rehearse a band, how to get the most out of a practices or rehearsal, and how to get everybody pulling together to make the impact you are looking for. Also how to create a show that can appeal to a wider audience without sacrificing musical integrity.

In our zoom meetups, I will be encouraging you to play for our group, and I would be interested to hear you play not only some of my music, but bring in something else you might be working on to play for the group.”
